The way in which society views beauty has changed as time goes by. Society’s interpretation of beauty has significantly changed over time and will continue to change. During this time period there was a lot of discrimination against women. They were not treated equally to men. They could not work or have the same rights as a man. They were suppose to stay home and be house wives. Their only obligations were to clean their house, take care of their children, and do exactly what they were told by their husband. During the 50's, society's definition of a beautiful woman was one who was light skinned with a full and curvy body. The media promoted this body image and every woman tried to get the curvy look. As times changed and the media changed, so did the definition of beauty. The media started promoting thin bodies and tanned kissed skin. In the 50's darker skin tones were associated with the lower class. The rich and wealthy, the ones that got shown off in the media, were expected to be the exact opposite; however, as time passed, women started to strive for a thinner body and tan skin.
Media advertises "beauty" and women try to be that certain type of beautiful. They don't come up with these ideas by themselves; they simply try to imitate what they see on TV, magazines, movies, and ext. If the media only demonstrates a certain body image with a certain weight, body shape, body size, hair and skin color, and facial features, women will start to get the idea that that is what it's right. Filling women’s heads with the tan, tall, slender a body of modern models is what the media uses to keep society up with the times. If an image is shown often, society will accept this image as normal and mimic it.
